NE NEWS - February 17, 2014

Northeast Community News – February 17, 2014
Hello Dear Ones! What a wonderful day we had in the Lord,Sunday! After a wonderful Sunday school hour we had an opportunity to ‘march’ forward with our Alabaster Boxes to give our collected ‘loose change’ (along with some cash and checks) to God to use in His mission field to purchase land and building materials around the world! When you add singing, praying, and preaching to the mix, well, it was a mighty wonderful worship service!
Our message this week came from I Kings 18:16-39 and titled, ‘Showdown at Mount Carmel.’ Throughout history, God’s people have had to guard against ‘foreign gods’ creeping into their lives. These ‘outlaw gods’ challenge God’s rightful place and in this passage we find a showdown of biblical proportions! Sadly Ahab, the current king of the Jewish people, married Jezebel, the daughter of the Egyptian Pharaoh, and allowed her to influence God’s people with Baal and Asherah, (false gods!)
Elijah, a prophet of God has been sent by God to tell the Jewish people it is time to leave behind their sinful worship of ‘false gods’ and return to Him! (Note: God did not leave them in their sin! He continued to call them out of their sin!)
In I Kings 18:16-39 Elijah calls for a showdown between their false gods and the Living God! Elijah creates a contest to see which ‘god’ can consume a bull with fire. All day long the 850 Baal and Asherah priests pray to their ‘god of fire.’ Nothing happens. Becoming desperate, they cut themselves with spears. Still nothing! After a day of prayer to a fire god on a dry day under the hot sun by 850 priests with the backing of the government, wealth, power, and opinion polls, we read “…there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention” (I Kings 18:29b). Then came Elijah’s turn!
After repairing the altar (v. 30), arranging the wood, and cutting the bull into pieces and laying it on the wood (v. 33) he did something nuts! He had 4 large jars of water poured until “The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench” (I Kings 18:35).
Then in a simple prayer, Elijah asked, O LORD, God of Abraham, Jacob, Isaac, and Israel, let it be know today that you are God in Israel…so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God and that you are turning their hearts back again” (I Kgs 18:36-37).
You know what happens, right? God answered this one preacher’s simple prayer and the fire consumed everything! Remember, God answers prayers simply spoken! The power is not in your words, but in the God to whom you pray! But it’s also important to guard against ‘foreign gods!’ In a world where we are asked to accept every faith to be ‘politically correct,’ we need to declare boldly there is only One True God who has the power to do the extraordinary! May our response to God’s power be the same as those who witnessed it that day: “...they fell prostrate and cried, ‘The LORD – he is God! The LORD – he is God!” (I Kings 18:39). In Jesus alone we find strength, power, and hope!

NEWS AND EVENTS
MISSIONARY GATHERING EXPERIMENT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!
Janie, Tracy, Gerry, and Liz had a great idea! Let’s try a special missionary gathering at 4pm on Sunday at the parsonage and share, pray, and learn about missions for a full hour. In case you wondered if anyone would come, 15 people gathered, laughed, ate cookies, popcorn, sliders, (and let’s not forget about the amazing brownies), and learned a ton about missions! Will they do it again? I hope so! If you would like to give Janie feedback email her:allsmiles@comcast.net or call 204-2499!
ALABASTER OFFERING BLESSINGS!
Yesterday we received our Alabaster offering and what a blessing! Jeffrey told me ‘he was bringing his money to God’s church to use for God’s church.’ Jeffrey get’s it! What a blessings to see kids, teens, and adults line up and march forward to give!
Shannen thinks we’ll have over $350 when all the change is counted! Wow! Praise the Lord for all of the faithful givers! You are such a blessing! Our next Alabaster Offering is Sep. 21st so get your alabaster box now and start collecting your change!
THIS JUST IN! SPECIAL ELECTION CALLED FOR S.D.M.I. SUPERINTENDENT
On Mar. 02 we are having a special election to replace Pastor Amy as Sun. School and Discipleship Min. Superintendent. Your church board nominated one person: Gerry Dawson. Gerry has previously served many years as our Superintendent and is presently serving as Interim. Members will be asked to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on a special ballot distributed before and after Sun. school on Mar. 02. God is good!
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS MAR. 09
For weeks I’ve been saying, ‘Spring is coming!’ While the snow may try to fool us, Spring really is around the corner so it’s just about time for daylight savings time again! So, don’t forget to ‘Spring forward’ one hour before you go bedSat., Mar. 08 or you just might just arrive late for Sundayschool or church!
THIS JUST IN! JANIE HATHAWAY APPOINTED NYI PRESIDENT
When Theo left to support of Pastor Amy’s call to Muskegon Breakwater we lost our Nazarene Youth International (NYI) President, but know what? God always supplies! Besides, He loves our teens more than we do! So, it is with joy and complete confidence under the guidance and leadership of your church board, I appointed Janie President of the NYI to lead our youth through the end of the 2013-2014 church year (May 31).
Janie loves teenagers (and I think often acts like one!) had served many years in youth ministry, and has already picked up where Theo left off by planning a new fund raiser to send our teens to camp, having them over for a Valentine’s Cookie baking day and asking the church board to support sending our teens to ‘One State – One Ticket’ a HUGE Christian Concert! God is good how often? All the time!! Please pray for our teens and Janie their new leader! Amen!
JONATHON’S AFRICAN MISSION REPORT (and Breakfast) MAR. 02 at 9:45AM
Last month, Jonathon Gingrich travelled with fellow students from Calvin College to Africa to examine (among other things) water purification needs and problems in rural Africa. Our missions & discipleship leaders have asked Jonathon to present his experiences and insightsMar. 02 during Sun. school (at 10:00am). They will also be cooking and serving breakfast at 9:45am! Come discover Africa first hand!
Jonathon Gingrich, a Nazarene from Columbus, Ohio is in his second year at Calvin College and is studying to be a chemical engineer in response to God’s call. Jonathon feels God wants him to use his life and skills to create low energy water purification systems in the mission field. While he is in Grand Rapids, he worships with us!

THIS JUST IN! WED. NIGHT LOCATION CHANGESTARTING MAR. 05!
It has been a long winter filled with lots of snow, cold air, and shoveling! Perhaps this explains our Wed. Night Attendance drop! Perhaps, attendance will rebound in the Spring! But this one thing is clear: it seems like poor stewardship to heat the church for the 12 or so coming right now! So, beginning Mar. 05, babies, kids, teens, and adults are going to meet at the parsonage (across the parking lot) until it makes sense to go back! Hope to see you there in one of our comfy chairs! J
COMING SOON! ORDER EASTER FLOWERS AND REMEMBER!
We’re planning to decorate the church again for EasterSunday and you can help by ordering flowers in ‘honor’ or ‘memory’ of a loved one and then take them home on Easter Sunday! Look for more details and order form coming soon!

NE NEWS - February 10, 2013

Northeast Community News – February 10, 2014
We had another wonderful day in the Lord, Sunday! In addition to the wonderful time of discipleship, prayer, and worship, we had our every other month Community Potluck and share lots of fun, food, and fellowship! While Pastor Amy and Theo’s kielbasa was noticeably missing (sigh), others more than made up for this loss with lots of good food! We were surely blessed with fun, food, and fellowship! Perhaps the message I found for Dean to put out front summarized it best: “God’s Love is Deeper than this Snow.” Surely God’s love was evident on each face and in our hands and feet, too! Praise God! Amen!
Perhaps it is just coincidence (which I struggle to believe!), but God’s message this week was titled “A New Commandment” and came from John 13:31-35. In one of His final private conversations with His disciples, Jesus declares: “A New command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34).
First, regardless of the fact his followers had known the great Shema (the central prayer in the Jewish prayer book) since childhood which declared, “Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deut. 6:4-5) and Jesus had ‘answered correctly’ the debating teachers of the Law with the Shema plus ‘mind’ and ‘love for neighbor’ in His answer to them found in Mark 12:28b-30, the love Jesus commanded was ‘new!’
What was new? They were to “Love one another. As I [Jesus] have loved you.” Love, the way Jesus commanded them to love, could be found in His example! In Jesus, we find love washes feet (John 13:1-17), love finds value in the discarded (Luke 10:25-37), and love has no limit (think His arrest, scourging, and crucifixion). In Jesus we find love is generous, extravagant, and willing to pay ‘whatever it costs’ even death of a cross!
But Jesus’ command does not simply redefine love and provide endless examples; His command invites us to join Him! Jesus wants you to love God for sure, but He wants you to love family, friends, coworkers, classmates, and perfect strangers like He did, too! Let your love be generous, sacrificial, and extravagant!  Jesus said, “By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). Let it be so! Amen!

NE NEWS - February 03, 2014

Northeast Community News – February 03, 2014

As we encountered more snow this week I wondered what the Bible had to say about snow. Have you ever wondered? The prophet Isaiah wrote: “Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool” (Isaiah 1:18).
King David wrote in his confession to God over his sin with Bathsheba, “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow” (Psalm 51:7).
Sure through Jesus we can embrace and claim these promises! Through the blood of Christ our sins can be cleansed and be made whiter than snow! So, as you are shoveling and shoveling and shoveling this week let the snow remind you when you confess your sins and ask Jesus into your heart your soul is whiter than the snow around you! Amen!
We had another wonderful day in the Lord, yesterday! This week we celebrated the Lord’s Supper as a Church family and were reminded of the blood that set us free!
It seems fitting, then, that God’s message to us this week was titled “Not One Among Many” from Colossians 1:15-23. Paul lived in a time of religious pluralism just like we do! He understood there were many ‘faiths’ surrounding him offering truth. And while they all offered truth, they were not The Truth. God has provided One Son, One Way, and One Savior and His name is Jesus Christ!
Colossians 1:15-23 is Scripture worthy of memorization! In these verses Paul declares why Jesus Christ is Superior to all other competitors! First in v. 15a we discover Christ is the ‘visible image of God.’ Jesus is truly God with the same nature as God. Second, He has always existed (v. 15b). Jesus existed before all creation! Third, in v. 16 we discover ‘Christ created everything!’ In fact, creation’s purpose (our purpose) is to glorify Christ!
Fourth, in v. 17 we discover Christ sustains everything. Jesus is active in His world – and in your life – every day! Fifth, we discover in v. 18a that Christ is in charge! Jesus is not only over the physical realms, but the spiritual ones, too! Sixth, we discover Christ is the firstfruits of the resurrection (v. 18b). Unlike other spiritual leaders we will not find His grave because He is eternally resurrected and alive! His resurrection is our promise of resurrection and validates He is who He said He was!
Seventh, in v. 19 we discover Jesus is One with God and contains the fullness – the essence of the Father. Finally, we discover in vv. 20-23 that while we were all once enemies of God and separated from Him because of our sinfulness, through Christ, God prepared One way for us to be reconciled, saved, sanctified, set free – Jesus! So, while the culture will always offer alternatives, Jesus is Lord! Not One Among Many! Amen! Love and Blessings, Pastor Dan Hathaway

Just a kindly reminder that if you can pay and haven’t please do! Thanks!
DID YOU KNOW YOU’RE SUPPORTING A HAITIAN CHURCH IN GRAND RAPIDS?
Yes you are! As many already know, Rev. Matthew Pierre, former pastor at Grand Rapids West Church of the Nazarene moved due to secular employment transfer last fall. Rev. Pierre, a Haitian, had led a growing church of Haitians on the West side of GR for many years and finding a new Haitian pastor would be difficult!
The exciting news is nothing is too difficult for God! Amen! God has provided a new pastor (Rev. Joas Occes) who just finished his training at Haiti Bible College and the District expects he will arrive in April or May. But, Grand Rapids West is financially struggling and needs $600 a month for 1 year to support their new pastor.
The District suggested the 13 churches in the our zone could help them and I was humbled to hear your church board joyfully wanted to help by giving $50 a month starting immediately! So, not only is one of the smallest churches the first to give, but we agreed to give a full 1/12 of the amount needed! What a joy it was to share our commitment with the other churches and challenge them! So, you may not have realized it, but because of your faithful giving, you are supporting a Haitian church right here in Grand Rapids! How cool is that? To God be the Glory! Amen!
INTERESTED IN MEMBERSHIP?
We have had two indicate an interest in membership and are considering forming a series of 4 classes beginning in February. If you are interested in learning more about the Church of the Nazarene or becoming a member of our church, please let Pastor Dan know by calling (616-204-1153) or emailing (hathdan@me.com) him!
A FEW MISFIT CHRISTMAS EVE CROSSES STILL AVAILABLE!
On Christmas Eve we examined our faith through the eyes of Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Hermie the Dentist, Yukon Cornelius the failed Peppermint Mine Prospector, and an island of rejected and unloved misfit toys. Like these misfits, Romans 3:23 reminds us we are all misfits, too! But through Jesus’ birth, death of the cross, and resurrection, we have ALL been sought out, offered grace, and received a welcome place in the Kingdom just the way we are through Jesus!
The cross reminds us we ALL have a place in the Kingdom! If you need a reminder, take a cross home! But, others need to know this, too! If you know someone who needs to know God loves them, regardless of their flaws, take them a cross in Jesus’ Name! You’ll find them on the table outside the sanctuary! Take one! Share one!
