Northeast Community News – August 24, 2015

Dear Friends and Family!
We had another wonderful day in the Lord, this week! The dog days of summer couldn’t keep the faithful away! What a blessing to have Jonathan G. return from Ohio for his last year at Calvin! What a blessing, too, for all of the visitors God has sent us lately! I probably say it too often, but I think ‘God is up to something’ here! I can see His fingerprints in your smiles and laughter, your service, and in your tears and uplifted hands! Praise God!
God’s message came to us from Ps. 34:11-22 and titled, “Hope for the Brokenhearted.” Two weeks ago, we examined Ps. 34:1-8 and discovered Ps. 34 is David’s reflection of his escape from the Philistine King in 1 Sam. 21:10–14. He makes it clear it wasn’t his quick thinking that set him free! He wrote, “In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles” (v. 6). Where should we turn when we’re in crisis? Turn to Jesus!
In v. 18 we discover this Psalm is also written for pre-Christians! David writes, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
While you’ve likely never been ‘there,’ many around you feel too hopeless to look up. There are people in your neighborhood, work, and family who are crushed in sprit and so broken hearted they’re considering suicide. It may even include you! But hear the good news!
For those whose spirit is crushed; whose heart is broken; for those who feel hopeless to the point of considering ending their own life, hear this! Jesus is close and is reaching out to you right now! Jesus fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy: “A bruised reed he [Jesus] will not break, and a smoldering wick he [Jesus] will not snuff out…” (Mt. 12:20). Jesus didn’t come to crush the broken, break the hurting, or snuff out the tiny little flame still barely burning within you!
No, Jesus came to ‘seek and save the lost’ (Lk. 19:10) ; heal the sick (Matt 9:12) ; and give fullness of life (Jn. 10:10). He wants to fan that little flame within you! All you need to do is ‘cry out to Him.’ We closed with ‘Cry Out to Jesus’ by Third Day and invited those gathered to respond as the Holy Spirit led them. Listen to a portion of the lyrics:
There is grace and forgiveness, mercy and healing, He’ll meet you wherever you are! Cry out to Jesus! When you’re lonely and it feels like the whole world is falling on you, you just reach out, you just cry out to Jesus! Cry to Jesus!
Are you broken, crushed, bruised, and hopeless? Stop pretending you’re fine and cry out to Jesus! There is indeed grace and forgiveness, mercy and healing! Maybe you’re not but you know someone who is? Share this message of good news with them! Blessings, Pastor Dan

SCHOOL PAL PAKS! BRING YOUR SUPPLIES TO CHURCH IN AUG.
The Church of the Nazarene operates many schools around the world, providing quality education for children. Unfortunately, many can’t even afford the basics. To meet this need, our NMI collects and ships ‘School Pal-Paks’ made available to kids around the world. Want to help? Click this link for a list of supplies or look in this week’s bulletin.
SUNDAY SCHOOL HOURS ARE CHANGING IN TWO WEEKS (SEP. 06)
To allow for those who enjoy coming a bit early to church to fellowship and socialize, our Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries Director Gerry Dawson has changed our Sunday school time to start at 9:45 beginning Sept. 06th.  This change allows our Sunday School classes to finish at 10:30 so the Annex/ Fellowship area is available for anyone arriving early to church wanting a place to eat a cookie, drink coffee, and fellowship!
PRE-WEDDING RECEPTION FOR JENN S. AND JESSE C. – SEP. 13 AT 12:30PM
You are invited to a “Pre-Wedding Reception” to honor our friends, Jenn Smith and Jesse Churilla. Since many of you may not be able to attend their formal reception, we thought it would be fun to have a ‘pre-wedding reception’ here at Northeast Community Church on Sun., Sept 13, (before the wedding) immediately after our Sunday worship service approximately at 12:30PM. If you have any questions, see Cherry P. or Fran S.
CHILDREN’S CHURCH BEGINS SEP. 13
We are just a few weeks away from children’s church again this fall! We love kids and realize children often worship and learn better when they create something with their hands and get an opportunity to move around! Remember, children’s church dismisses after our prayer time during our worship service every week EXCEPT the first Sunday of the month when we receive communion together as a family! Questions? See Gerry D.
SHHHH! SILENCE EVERYONE!
As I heard in the library regularly: “Shhhhhh! Be quiet!” Seriously, we would like everyone to remain silent in the sanctuary before the service to provide a quiet place for those who would like to pray and meditate! If you want to talk and catch up or just chat (like I do), please take your conversation out to the annex, instead! Bless you!
WE’RE GIVING AWAY THE OLD WOODEN TABLES!
We’ve been blessed with newer (and lighter) tables through the generous donations from the Thomas Christoffersen Memorial and the South Haven Church. This means our older, heavily used, and just plain heavy tables need to find new homes! Until the end of Aug., we’re limiting individuals to 2 tables. In Sep., you can have as many as you want! On Sep. 14 we will sell or donate what’s left on Craigslist! Questions? See Pastor Dan.
MISSIONARY BOOKS (SHERRY J. MAY BE LOOKING FOR YOU!)
Sherry J., our Missionary President, reports we’re past half way to reading 100 books this year! Praise the Lord! But, she wants those who have a missionary book to finish reading it and turn it in (so others can read it) and to find more readers to read them! Remember, Missionary books are written for children, youth, and adults and there will be prizes for those who read them all! See Sherry J. if you need a book or are ready to return one! If you wait too long, she may just start looking for you, instead!

THANK YOU FOR LOVING US AS WE CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF MARRIAGE!
Janie and I came together in an inauspicious way some 26 years ago. Meeting in a bar (Janie’s first time at the insistence of a friend) I met my ‘earthy angel’ who would lead me to Jesus, love me through the growth in grace, and encourage me to accept my call to ministry. God has been good to us through the ups and downs of marriage and you have been a part of it! Bless you for the wonderful reception after church Sunday, and for the unique and wonderful gift of a cross, surrounded by 25 SBA dollar coins in a frame! It is a unique and wonderful gift from a unique and wonderful church! We’re also thankful to have received the $50 Visa gift card and used it to go out to eat on our anniversary! Northeast Community News – August 17, 2015

Dear Friends and Family!
What another wonderful day we had in the Lord, Sunday! This past Sunday was another ‘twofer.’ We not only had a wonderful worship service, but we had a wonderful missionary service, too! If you are not coming to the Missionary Services you are missing out on some very special insights, laughter, and food! God is moving in our church! We are witnessing His power, His mercy, and His ability to transform human hearts and lives on a regular basis! How has Jesus changed you in the last year? If your answer is, ‘not much,’ then its time to try something different! Our God is on a mission! Let’s join Him! Amen!
God’s message this week came from Psalm 111:1-10 and titled, “The Basis for Obedience.” Originally, the Spirit seemed to pointing me in the direction of answering why do we do the things we do in the faith, but He changed me to consider ‘how’ we know which way to turn when we come to making decisions. You see, all of us face life-changing decisions regularly. Who to date, when and if to marry, and the choice of your career and friends are just some of the decisions we make that can have life-changing implications later.
Among the questions Psalm 111 answers is ‘where to seek wisdom.’ Each of us has at least one source for wisdom, but many of us have many trusted sources. These sources include parents, friends, children, the Internet, the hairdresser, and Dr. Phil (to name a few). While these sources may give good advice, even great advice, Psalm 111 asks should these be the primary source of wisdom? The answer is no! In v. 10 we learn “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow His precepts have good understanding” (Ps. 111:10a).
Why is the LORD the beginning of wisdom? In the first 9 verses, the Psalm writer gives his reasons. God’s works are great, glorious, and majestic! (vv.2-3). God is righteous, gracious, and compassionate providing food, land, and security! (vv. 4-6). God is powerful, faithful, just, trustworthy, and upright (vv. 6-8). Finally, he concludes, He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever— holy and awesome is his name” (v. 9). When we begin to comprehend how awesome God is, we’ll be equipped to trust Him completely, accept and receive His wisdom, and follow His ways.
Need good advice? Certainly seek the advice of good and wise friends, but, make sure you’re seeking the primary source of wisdom, first! Listen to His answer by reading His Word, praying, worshipping, and silently listening for His voice! Blessings, Pastor Dan

Northeast Community News – August 10, 2015

Dear Friends and Family!
We had a wonderful day in the Lord, this week! In addition to our time of prayer, worship, and discipleship, we gathered at our August potluck. What a joy to see new and old faces come together to share the joy and pain of living out their faith over a communal meal. In Acts 2:42 we read, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Indeed, when we come together we are connecting with our ancient faith heritage! Bless everyone who made this reality possible! Praise God!
God’s message this week came from Psalm 34:1-8 and was titled, “Try It, You’ll Like It!” Most remember parents and grandparents encouraging them to move beyond immature and irrational fears to experience something good! The assumption was if they could get us to try something once, we would realize how good it was and come back for more!
What works for green beans and swimming pools works in the faith, too! David declares you’ll never know how good faith in Christ is until you taste Him yourself! In the intro to Psalm 34 we discover David is reflecting on the crisis he experienced in 1 Sam. 21:10-14. While running from Saul, David takes refuge in Philistine kingdom only to be taken hostage. If we only read Samuel’s account, we might believe David responds brilliantly! Go David!
But in Psalm 34, David declares his escape wasn’t the result of brilliant thinking, but a loving God who freed him from his fears (v. 4) and saved him from his troubles (v. 6). He wasn’t clever; he was overwhelmed, humbled, and desperate. “In my desperation I prayed, and the LORD listened (v. 6). David simply humbled himself and prayed! God did the rest!
Are you in crisis? Do you feel like a hostage in your situation? Are you overwhelmed and outnumbered? Then turn to God in prayer! Jesus still listens, frees, and saves those who humbly come to him with all of their troubles! Yield your life completely to the Holy Spirit, cast your cares upon Him, and be saved beyond your wildest imagination!
David models how to respond when God answers prayer, too! “I will praise the Lord at all times, I will constantly speak of his praises” (v. 1). He remembered all God did, praised Him constantly, and shared his testimony with others! Finally, in v. 8 we find David, desiring all people know the joy he experienced he was saved and delivered, declares, “Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8). May all of us praise, testify, and inviting others to taste the joy of our deliverer! Blessings, Pastor Dan

VISIT OR WRITE OR CALL A ‘SHUT-IN’ THIS WEEK!
I was going to give you Bob Hill’s information so you could call or visit him while he rehabilitates from hip surgery (and I will), but then I got to thinking all of our shut ins would appreciate a visit or a card or a phone call! Time goes slowly without any contact. Many can feel forgotten. Perhaps if you could visit one in the next couple weeks? If not, why not send a card or call one or two of them this week! Bless you for caring!

Northeast Community News – August 03, 2015

We had another wonderful day in the Lord, Sunday! This week we gathered at the Lord’s Table as the people of God and received the elements of Communion. The Lord’s Table is a place where everyone who is trusting in Christ for his or her salvation gathers. Regardless of wealth or age or background we all come to the Lord’s Table together on equal footing, humbly taking our place as one unified body remembering, receiving. What a blessing and profound testimony to have Samantha and Madelyn R. assist me this month! God is good!
God’s message this week came from Psalm 78:23-29 and was titled, “Learning From the Past.” Many of us struggled learning history when we were in school. In fact, many of us have made a point to forget as much history as fast as possible once we left school. While I may have been one of them (ok, I was one of them!), it is unfortunate. Winston Churchill has said, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it!” This is true, but it certainly didn’t originate with Churchill! Ps. 78 reminds us this truth originated with God!
Sadly, if you read the O.T. for any length of time you will discover Israel regularly forgot and followed a painful cycle repeatedly. First, they acknowledged, worshipped, learned the Law, and followed God. Life was good and they prospered. Next, for whatever reason, they began to slide. From looking to God, they began to look to self. Oh, they still acknowledged God, but they no longer really followed and served Him.
As you might imagine, it wasn’t a really big step to embrace immoral behavior and sin. They seemingly forgot about God at this point, and began doing whatever felt good, often sinning with abandon. Deep in sin and acting like the heathens they were, God often punished them and in their misery they turned to Him, repented, and were restored. You may wonder why they kept repeating this cycle? I am convinced they refused to learn from the past!
So, where are you on the cycle right now? Yielded to the Spirit and obediently following? Acknowledging God but no longer serving and following Him? Denying God and embracing sin? Being punished? The point of Psalm 78:23-29 is to remind us God never gave up on the Israelites and He hasn’t given up on you! Psalm 78 reminds us God loved, sought, provided, and finally came as Jesus to redeem the very people who mocked, tested, and failed to trust Him! Have you learned from your past? Maybe it’s time to stop the madness, confess your drift (or wilful running), and come home! God loves you and so do I! Blessings, Pastor Dan

Corey, the Supper House Coordinator for N.E.C.M., told me we’ll be serving pancakes this week and they expect a crowd of 200+ people! Bless everyone who is willing to help! We’ll need you!

MISSIONARY BOOKS
Missionary Books are available! There are books designed for children, youth, and adults to learn about missions. JUST A REMINDER! NO CHILDREN’S CHURCH IN JUL. AND AUG.
Yes, we love your children and agree kids can worship and learn about Jesus better when they can create something with their hands, receive a snack to eat, and move around, but our children's workers are taking vacation, so for the next 2 months the kids are staying in the worship service with us! Bless you for understanding!
EAT SOUP AND GATHER BOX TOPS FOR NAZARENE INDIAN MISSIONS!
Remember! Campbell Soup labels and General Mills box tops are worth cash! While it seems small, it really adds up! This program has provided PA equipment, computers, and even a 15-passenger van for Nazarene Sun Valley Indian School. Give your labels and box tops to Fran S. and Sherry J. See Fran or Sherry if you have any questions.
GUIDELINES FOR PRAYER REQUESTS
Remember, to keep our prayer lists current, we only place requests in the newsletter and bulletin for 3 weeks without an update. If you want to keep your prayer request in the bulletin or newsletter just keep filling out the tear off tabs and keep us informed!
