Northeast Community News – November 12, 2019

Dear Friends and Family!
We had another wonderful day in the Lord, Sunday! In addition to a wonderful time of prayer and discipleship under the teaching of Gerry D. in Sunday school, and Spirit led worship by Steve H. and Sherry J., we were blessed with a visit from Rev. Kevin Hardy, our District Superintendent!
Remember, unlike other denominations, the Church of the Nazarene polity empowers the local church! Unlike bishops who direct their churches from the top down, an elected Superintendent works with the local Spirit led elected pastor and church board to further the gospel. While much of Rev. Hardy’s work is administrative, he remains a pastor at his core and it was evident Sunday.
The message from God Rev. Hardy brought this week was from Psalm 145. He began by sharing the following statistic: there are 5467 promises in the Bible! Not only are their 5467 promises, but we can trust God to keep ALL of them! The psalmist wrote, “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations” (Psalm 145:13). God is faithful to all his promises and to everyone! Our work is to believe ALL means ALL!
So do you? Too often we might be tempted to see ourselves or others as somehow ineligible for God’s promises. But the psalmist declares God will keep His promises are too
But, Rev. Hardy points out, it is important to remember God also knows when the time is perfect to fulfill his promises. The psalmist wrote, “The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time” (Psalm 145:15). It’s important to differentiate between our preferred time (like right now) and God’s proper time! Only God knows the proper time to keep His promise. True faith flows between seasons of anticipation and realization.
Finally, Rev. Hardy points out that we’re to make praise an everyday encounter. The psalmist writes, “Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever” (Psalm 145:2). Do you limit your praise to a once a week celebration or do you find reason to praise every day?
Rev. Hardy left us with these three thoughts: 1) Make praising God a topic of conversation, 2) Make praising God a focus of meditation, and 3) Make praising God a cause for celebration! I pray each of us embrace and praise God for kept promises! Amen? Amen!                      Blessings, Pastor Dan

Serving at Supper House

We had a great time serving dinner last night!

Northeast Community News – May 28, 2019

Dear Friends and Family!
Happy Memorial Day! Well, Happy Memorial Day + 1 day! In observance of Memorial Day our office was closed. I do hope you had an opportunity to give thanks to God for those who have died serving or having served our country, and for other loved ones we have lost. Janie and I had a chance to travel to Fort Custer National Cemetery to visit dad’s grave with mom and attended the Memorial Day parade in Hastings. What did you do to remember those God has given you?
God’s message this week came to us from 2 Timothy 1:3-5 and was titled, “Lest We Forget.” God has always placed prominence on people! He created them in His image, gave them stewardship over the rest of creation, has enduring love for them, and even after the sinful fall provided them with a Savior so they may be saved, sanctified, and one day return to His presence in heaven.
As we think about Memorial Day, many things can come to mind: extra time off from work, going to the beach, grilling, eating, and the Indy 500 can be some of them. My hope is that you’ll spend some time remembering God and others. In 2 Timothy 1:3-5 we see that Paul remembered his friend Timothy. In verse 3, we read, “I constantly remember you...in my prayers.” In verse 4, we read Paul saying, “Recalling your tears....” and in verse 5, we read, “I have been reminded of your sincere faith...”
Paul remembered Timothy enough to pray for him, remembered the pain and tears in Timothy’s life, and remembered he was a man of faith in the Lord. I would say Timothy was important to Paul… how do I know? Because Paul remembered Timothy and took action! Paul thought about Timothy, prayed for Timothy, and remembered Timothy’s pain, tears, and faith!
This Memorial Day we need to surely remember those who have died and put those memories to action! How about you? Will your memory take action? But, we ought to also remember the living this Memorial Day. Once Paul was saved, he spent very little time trying to remember and boast of his accomplishments; he spent a whole lot of time on who Jesus wanted him to speak to about their need of a Savior. For Paul, people were more important than accomplishments or failures.
How about you? Do you remember and care about the needs of the living? John Wesley once said: Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can. So, will you? Will you do ALL the good you can, in ALL the ways you can, to ALL the people you can this Memorial Day or will you make the holiday all about you? Memorial Day is about remembering the dead and the living. I pray you’ll take to time, reflect and give thanks for both! Blessings, Pastor Dan

Northeast Community News – February 26, 2019

Dear Friends and Family!

What another wonderful day in the Lord, Sunday. While the weather huffed, and puffed, it still couldn’t blow God’s house down! (at least not yet! Smile). The violent weather and sickness did keep many from coming to church this week, but it gave me a chance to teach the adult Sunday school class this week and it was a good one! Speaking of Sunday school, we start a new quarter next week… which is great place to start or re-start your discipleship journey! One great thing about this class, is you can participate by talking and sharing or just staying quiet and listening. So, come, grab a cookie, some coffee or cocoa and be blessed! You will be glad you did! Amen!
God’s message this Sunday came from 1 Corinthians 15:35-56 and was titled, ‘Everlasting Life.’ Have you ever wondered what happens when you die? What we discover is death isn’t the end of the story, but the beginning of another new chapter of life! For those trusting in Jesus for their salvation, death still comes, but then death is overcome and conquered as a gift that leads to eternal life!
Earlier in chapter 15, Paul reminds the Corinthian Church of core Christian beliefs. In essence, are you Christian? If you are, then you receive the promises Christ provided in His death and resurrection of everlasting life, including your own resurrected body. One day Christians will experience the ultimate extreme, make-over. Paul provides a few clues about our resurrected bodies.
First, Paul begins his teaching with the obvious…we must die! Paul writes: “How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies” (I Cor. 15:36). Then, in vs. 37-38, Paul tells us our old body will provide the seed to our new bodies. While your resurrected body is brand new, if it doesn’t come from your own body it’s not a resurrection.
But this answers another important question… will we be recognizable to our loved ones when we get to heaven? In Jesus example of resurrection, we discover His body was recognizable and yet so different He wasn’t recognized at first, but Mary knew His voice and His body still bore the marks of the crucifixion. He had a real body that could be touched and could eat.
Finally, in vs. 42-44 Paul tells us our resurrected body will be indestructible (imperishable), glorious, powerful, and spiritual. In our resurrected bodies we finally become who God always meant us to be. I pray you all have received Christ, continue to grow in grace, and look forward to everlasting life in your resurrected bodies! Amen!                         Blessings, Pastor Dan

WOMEN’S RENDEZVOUS IS MARCH 9TH
We will meet at the church at 10:30 AM and “do your own thing”.  This means bring something you are working on, i.e. craft, sewing, knitting, crocheting, making cards, etc.  Snacks are also provided, along with coffee and water for tea.
2019 LENTEN JOURNEY BEGINS WITH ASH WED., MARCH 06!
Lent is a 40-day purposeful time of fasting and reflection beginning on Ash Wed (3-06) and ending on Easter (4-21) except the Sunday’s of Lent (which are considered ‘mini’ Easter’s). During Lent, many spend more time reading their Bibles and praying while fasting something that competes with God for worship! Some ‘fast’ sweets, coffee, and a few fast Facebook.
On Wed., Mar. 06 we will have the ashes (last year’s crushed and burned Palm leaves) mixed with holy oil available for those who would like to receive ‘the imposition of ashes,’ It’s optional, but many keep the tradition of seeking an ‘ash cross’ on their forehead to remind them at the start of their Lenten journey that ‘from ashes you came; to ashes you shall return.’ Hope to see you there!
LENTEN SMALL GROUP AT THE PARSONAGE (Start 3-09)
Since Lent is a time when many spend additional time reading their Bibles and reflecting on their faith, Janie has suggested again we gather on the Saturday’s of Lent at 6pm for a simple meal of soup and salad to discuss the assigned readings. No need to bring anything, but Janie would like to know (if possible) if you’re coming! The dinners start on March 09 and end April 20. Hope to see you there! RSVP to Jane at (616) 204-1153 (call or text) or email her at hathjan@icloud.com

This is late due to the winter weather we had last week.

Dear Friends and Family!
We had another wonderful day in the Lord, Sunday! While I received some comments last week that the weather last week wasn’t really that frightful, today, as I write, I believe it really is! Not that our cross-country skiing and snowmobiling friends aren’t happy, but blowing and drifting snow for the rest of us is a good reason to stay inside and drink a warm beverage! Do be safe if you leave the house today and let me know if you need anything!
That said, we had a wonderful time in the Lord! Mary gave us wonderful insight on Luke 8:26-39 and our worship service was wonderful, too! This week Anna B. handed out our annual giving statements, too. What a joy to give to the Lord, Amen? Amen!
God’s message this Sunday came from 1 Cor 12:12-31 and was titled, ‘The Dynamic Church.” Using a metaphor that even a toddler would understand, Paul describes the church as a dynamic, unified, and organic body. If a body is dynamic, it moves; accomplishes; and makes a difference. The church should be no different! The Church when it is the Church, moves, demonstrating that Christ is alive in the world today. So how about you? If the church is dead, what does that say about you? Maybe it’s time to start moving again!
Second, Paul uses a body to demonstrate the unity of the Christian church (see I Cor. 12:12-13). Sadly, some have begun thinking more like the NFL than a congregation when they start looking for ‘free agents’ instead of appreciating the gifts they have been given. Preacher boring? Choir out of tune? Well, let’s try to draft to fill that hole… or maybe find another church! Instead, Paul sees the church as a connected whole brought together by God on purpose for purpose. It isn't easy to set aside our individual preferences, for the good of the community, but that’s what we are to do.
The third characteristic of the body of Christ is that it’s organic…it is designed and equipped to grow. The Church, when it is a healthy church, is one great living body reaching out to the world in Christlike love. But sometimes the body gets sick, turns inward and stops growing, and dies. Sadly, we’ve all watched churches that struggle, get sick, begin to shrivel up, and eventually die.
So, how can a church as an organism stay healthy and strong? First, individuals and the whole must embrace the disciplines of worship, bible reading, and praying. Second, the church must give her time, talents, and resources and serve individually and collectively. Finally, the church must support her mission’s program individually and collectively. Let’s all do our part to keep Northeast Community Church healthy, strong, and growing!                                Blessings, Pastor Dan

Northeast Community News – January 22, 2019

Dear Friends and Family!
How does that familiar song go? ‘Well, the weather outside is frightful…’ Seriously, it was a very cold Sunday to come to church and I imagine many of you stayed in near your ‘delightful fire’, but even with that said it was still a wonderful day in the Lord. In fact, not only did we study one of my favorite passages of Scripture in Sunday school, but we had a person tell me they would be willing to sing a special in church, and even better, I had another person tell me they’ve decided to make Northeast Community Church their church home! How wonderful is that? Praise God!!
Do you know someone looking for a church home or in need of the Savior? Why not invite them to come to church with you this week! While I can’t assure you it’ll be warmer outside the church, I can guarantee your guest will be warmly received inside the church! God is good! All the time!
God’s message Sunday came from 1 Corinthians12:1-11 and was titled, ‘Unwrapping Your Spiritual Gifts.’ So, what are your gifts? Have you unwrapped them? Much like children at Christmas, followers of Jesus should be excited to discover and unwrap their spiritual gifts. God has not only given us life, and eternal life, but spiritual gifts us for the benefit of the body (the Church) and His Mission to seek and save the lost! Look with me at verses 4-7:
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are differentkinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (I Cor. 12:4-7).
If God is working through the Holy Spirit in ALL men (and women, boys and girls), why are so many reluctant to unwrap their God given gifts? I suspect many don’t use them because they are comparing themselves to others. If I can’t sing like… or know the Bible like… then I better keep my gift of music and teaching to myself. But, if your gifts are given to you through the Holy Spirit for the ‘common good’ how can you refuse to unwrap and use your gift?
True, you may not sing like a professional or know the Bible like a scholar, but that is no reason to put yourself down and refuse to us your God given gift. In fact, when you refuse to use your gift and act like you know better than God, you are questioning the wisdom of the Gift-Giver (God).
Further, we need to remember the second part of verse7. God’s Spirit works through us, not for our glory, but for His glory and the common good. God knows exactly what our church needs, and He has brought all of us together! Therefore, if you’re not using your gift, the church is like a jigsaw puzzle with pieces missing. It’s irritating! It’s frustrating! We’re incomplete! Everybody matters! Everybody counts! Everybody ought to be serving God’s Kingdom and Body as they are gifted!
So, don’t put yourself down. Don’t compare yourself to others. When you say you have nothing to offer, you’re saying more about your lack of faith than about yourself. You are limiting what God can do. The truth is, all of us are supernaturally equipped to be part of God’s greater mission at Northeast Community Church of the Nazarene. Let’s go! Just do it!                        Blessings, Pastor Dan

The dinners start on March 09 and end April 20.Hope to see you there! RSVP to Jane at (616) 204-1153 (call or text) or email her at hathjan@icloud.com
