Northeast Community News – July 24, 2017

   Dear Friends and Family!
They’re back! That’s right! Last night after the last service ended, Janie and I packed two very full cars (including two cats and a dog) and returned home from Indian Lake Nazarene Camp after a FULL week of Bible Study, Worship, Prayer, District Assembly, and Youth, Missions, and Discipleship Conventions! Wow! Our cups are full! Bless you for the opportunity! God is good!
No doubt you were blessed as Rick Evans shared God’s Word at Northeast Community! Rick’s message was titled “Are you A Sam?”  This is in reference to Luke 10:25-37 and the Parable of the Good Samaritan.  He referred to Sam as a person who is willing to help others.  Jim (the Jew) is a person who has needs.  Many people in our world are suffering.  Sometimes all they need is someone to sit beside them and not necessarily speak.  Many others in the Bible suffered: (just to name a few) Job, David, Elijah, Jonah, Moses, Jeremiah, and Jesus himself.   So all “Sams” need to keep an eye out for those who are hurting and need someone to show them Jesus’ love.  All “Jims” need to ask for help.
I look forward to hearing how God spoke to you in Grand Rapids last Sunday!  While there were many messages from our speakers at Indian Lake, I’ll share the last one with you. Dr. T. Scott Daniels preached on Jonah 4:1-11 and his titled was “A Bad Ending to a Great Story.”   Unlike, most stories that end ‘happily ever after,’ Jonah doesn’t end this way. You’ll recall Jonah begins with God’s call. “The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me” (Jonah 1:1-2)
But, in verse 3, we discover Jonah does just the opposite! But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord” (Jonah 1:3).
And, as even a child will tell you, a terrible storm came up and Jonah finally convinces the sailors to throw him overboard and a whale swallows him! Finally, in the depths of the sea Jonah confesses and God answers by vomiting Jonah onto dry land where God gives him a second chance to go to Nineveh and Jonah obeys! (and 120,000 people repent and are saved!)
But, instead of the story ending with an obedient Jonah and repentant Nineveh, we discover Jonah isn’t happy 120,000 in Nineveh were saved. In fact, he would just as soon die! How sad!  “But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. He prayed to the Lord, “O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. Now, O Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live” (Jonah 4:1-3).
From this, Dr. Daniels had three lessons. First, do we at Northeast Community Church really want ‘those people’ to be saved? Perhaps some of us have even entertained thoughts of ‘those people’ getting theirs when Jesus comes instead of being saved! God forgive us!
Second, are we not only resistant to reach out to ‘those people,’ but skeptical of those who are successfully doing so using methods were not comfortable with? God raised the Church of the Nazarene for a purpose (and it wasn’t to maintain structures). In 2 Peter 3:8-9 we discover God desires none perish but all will come to repentance. God will use any and all means necessary to reach people with Christ (with or without us!). Let’s celebrate where God is working!
Finally, do we ever fail to examine ourselves? Jonah knew the Lord God was indeed slow to anger and abounding in love, but he remained angry and distant from what God had done. What needed to change in Jonah? What needs to change in us?
   Blessings! Pastor Dan

Northeast Community News – July 18, 2017

   Dear Friends and Family!
Greetings from Indian Lake Nazarene Camp! Our plates as delegates to District Assembly and worshippers to our Living God and Savior Jesus Christ have been rich and full! What a joy it is to know that whether we worship in Grand Rapids and Vicksburg, or Guyana and Vanuatu, or as a body of 35 or 3,500 our God can encounter, encourage, and challenge us all equally! Surely, it was wonderful to worship with 20,000 in Indianapolis at General Assembly last month, and worship in Vicksburg with 3,500 at District Assembly and Family Camp, but was also just as wonderful to worship at Northeast Community Church in Grand Rapids with 35. God is good! All the time!
Last Sunday we continued our series on Discipleship Essentials. If you want to live a victorious life, you must choose the right path! At salvation, you are given a choice: return to the road you once travelled that leads to sin and destruction or travel the narrow road that leads to love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). No decision is a decision! Sadly, I’ve watched too many gloriously saved from sin only to return to sin and misery months later because they were reluctant to embrace a life of discipleship! If you want to ‘stop the madness’ you need to learn and embrace essential beliefs and practices.
This week we examined a key discipleship practice: prayer. As we turn to Luke 11 and read Jesus’ teaching on prayer, we are reminded by scholars when the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray (v. 1) this is the first time the disciples had asked Jesus for anything! So, if you want to learn to pray, you must first understand it must be learned! Ask Jesus! He’ll help you!
Jesus did offer the disciples some lessons in Luke 11:1-11 we ought to consider, too! First, in vv. 2-4 Jesus provides them a pattern. Much like Matthew’s recollection in Matthew 6, Jesus instructs the disciples to begin with Our Father. Christians don’t pray to some ‘greater power’ they pray to their Heavenly Father in whom they are in relationship with through Jesus Christ! We aren’t just creations, we are His children! Amen? Amen!
Jesus quickly moves this outline for prayer by teaching when we pray we ought to honor God’s name and hallow it; that is, to witness His holiness through the holy lives we live. Jesus also teaches prayer ought to include seeking God’s will on earth (and in our lives) and ask Him to provide our physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, too. Since we have fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) our prayer ought to include confession for ourselves and in our relationships with others, too. Finally, Jesus teaches we ought to ask for help in overcoming temptation.
Then, in verses 5-8, Jesus uses a story to teach them about boldness and persistence in their prayer. In verse 9, Jesus concludes: “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened” (Luke 11:9).
Are you praying? Does your prayer and life hallow God’s name? Do you seek God’s will on earth as it is in heaven? Do you confess and pray for your needs and others? Are you persistently asking, seeking, and knocking? It’s a discipleship essential! Let’s be a people of prayer!                      Blessings! Pastor Dan

Northeast Community News – July 10, 2017

  Dear Friends and Family!
What another wonderful day we had in the Lord, Sunday! This Sunday something new was in the air. No, it wasn’t a new attitude or new discipleship offering or new way of doing worship. Nor was it new folks (although we did have two visitors which was fun). What was it then? Why, it was new LED lights that were installed in our ceiling light fixtures! In the last two weeks, Rick Evans, our new friend visiting from Joplin, purchased a case of new LED bulbs. With the help of Phil P., they replaced our old dingy bulbs high energy using florescent bulbs and ballasts with new energy efficient LED bulbs. When you turn on the lights the difference couldn’t be more extreme! Bless you Rick for your purchase and work and Phil for your help! As Timbuk 3 once sang, “The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades!” God is good! Yup, all the time!
This week we continued our series on Discipleship Essentials. If you want to live a victorious life, you must yield fully to God and embrace essential disciplines. Discipleship is more than being saved. As your pastor, I’ve watched in tears as alcoholics, drug addicts, and domestic assault victims were gloriously saved only to walk back out the door and return to their former ways.
I’m convinced if you want to end the roller coaster of faith and live a lifetime of victory, you must embrace the essential beliefs and disciplines of Jesus and the apostles. Last week we examined Quiet Time and Meditation – this week we examined another essential: Bible Study.
George Barna (founder of The Barna Group) found among people who identify themselves as Christian: 48% couldn’t name the 4 Gospels and 60% couldn’t name 5 of the Commandments. Barna wrote, “Americans revere the Bible, but by and large they don’t know what it says. And because they don’t know it, they have become a nation of Biblical illiterates.” Ouch or Amen?
In II Timothy, we find Paul writing to a young person preparing for ministry. To prepare young Timothy, Paul begins in 3:1 by making sure Timothy understands what he is up against in the church and in the culture. In 3:10 he reminds Timothy to follow his own example by doing right regardless of the cost, trusting God to rescue him, and learning to trust God’s Word. In chapter 4:3-4, he warns Timothy there is coming a day when people will want to hear what their itching ears want to hear and turn away from truth and turn towards myths. Is that day now? Help us!
The good news Paul tells Timothy is in a day of questionable truth and facts: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
The same God who breathed life into human form in Genesis 2:7 has breathed into His sacred text to guide our journey with Jesus and equip us to serve in His Kingdom! Are you ready? If you want to be grounded in your faith and live a full life of victory with Jesus, you must consume regular portions of God’s Living Word and let it change you!
Blessings! Pastor Dan

It is also the time when our District has assemblies and conventions for missions, youth, discipleship and we come together as a district for District Assembly (our District policy and governance organization).
One of my favorite activities is the ordination service where we see the culmination of much prayer, hard work, and accountability come together as the presiding General Superintendent first delivers a great message and then all the ordained elders (Pastors) and invited to lay hands on the candidate and the General Superintendent prays!
This year will be a special treat to see our own Amy Orban receive ordination! Many of you will remember Amy and Theo walking into our church fresh into recovery and over the years watching as God did miracle after miracle in their lives! We were witnesses to God’s saving and sanctifying work in their lives. We witnessed their baptisms, heard their testimonies, were invited to their wedding the arrival of two beautiful boys, Theo and Remington, and their wonderful service to Jesus as church board members!
But, in two weeks, after years of preparation and examination, God will bless them with a new miracle! Amy’s ordination as Elder in the Church of the Nazarene! Come for the service! Hug them and shake their hands and weep with them and witness first-hand what God can do in the lives of those yielded to Him. Nothing is impossible with God!

RICK EVANS TO FILL THE PULPIT JULY 23
Our visitor, Rick Evans, received a local pastor’s license from Jesse Middendorf (retired General Superintendent) in 1999. Life has a way of getting in the way of the best laid plans, and on advice from Dr. Middendorf, he mothballed his pastoral journey. But, God has a way of calling us out of our mothballed existence and Rick approached the church board and pastor to discuss God’s plans for his life. We’re glad he did!
On July 23, while Pastor Dan and Janie finish their week at District Camp, your church board has asked Rick to fill the pulpit. What a joy it is to watch obedience in action! Be in prayer for Rick as he discerns, along with your church board, God’s plans for his life!
