Northeast Community News – September 25, 2017

 Dear Friends and Family!

What another wonderful day we had in the Lord, Sunday! If you were in church Sunday, you no doubt heard a simultaneous service taking place downstairs as we worshipped upstairs! What a joy it was to hear the children singing, praying, and praising God in their own Children’s Church Service downstairs! Bless everyone who made ‘Children’s Church’ happen! Praise the Lord! The only thing left to do now, is for the rest of us to invite kids! So, be on the lookout for a kid in the neighborhood or in your own family who would like to come to a worship service full of wiggles, giggles, and the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit! God is good…. All the time! Amen!
Sunday, we continued our series on Discipleship Essentials by talking about another essential belief: Bearing Fruit! In Galatians 5:16-23, we discovered we all bear fruit! The only question is, “What kind of fruit are you bearing?” For unsaved and unsanctified believers, the fruit can be pretty bruised and ugly…and are pretty obvious! Paul listed them in vv. 19-21:
“The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like” (Galatians 5:19-21a).
But, for those walking in holiness and led by the Spirit, the contrast is quite striking! “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).
Why doesn’t everyone bear fruit of the Spirit? First, because there is a conflict between the sinful nature and the Holy Spirit. In v. 17 we read: “For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want” (Galatians 5:17).
If you’ve been saved longer than 4 hours, you know about the conflict between the Holy Spirit and the sinful nature living within you! The Spirit convicts, counsels, and leads us in the ways of holiness, but the internal sin nature wars against the Spirit living within! The only answer is to get rid of the sinful nature! How? Paul tells us it must die! In v. 24 we read, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires” (Galatians 5:24).
So, will you? Will you yield everything to God and ask Him to crucify your sinful nature and fill you with the power and presence of the Holy Spirit? Look, if you’re still trying to produce fruit of the Spirit while living in sin you may fool me, but you’re not fooling yourself, those who know you best, or God. Besides, pretending is exhausting! It’s time to 1) realize the war, 2) surrender completely, 3) be sanctified, and 4) abide in Him! His fruit is always best!    Blessings! Pastor Dan

Northeast Community News – September 18, 2017

   Dear Friends and Family!
We had another wonderful day in the Lord, Sunday! For two of our members it was the best Sunday ever! Why? Because, for Phyllis Plath and Gary Parker they worshipped God first hand around God’s throne in heaven in restored bodies that had no more pain, no more sadness, no more limitations, no more sin or sorrow! Yes, we will miss both of them! But, as Christians we realize this ‘place is not our home.’ Funeral arrangements are coming, but for now, pray for the loved family and friends left behind mourning and their unsaved loved ones who need Jesus!
A few months ago, I was sent a link to join “The Culture Generator” by our District Youth President. It has been an eye-opening experience to read what teens face today. Yes, they occasionally ask for a donation, but this free resource is an excellent way to understand the pain and pressure our teens face. For example, in an article I received today titled “Kylie’s not immune” I read that Kylie Jenner revealed the reason behind her “world-changing plump pout: A boy judged her kissing skills.” The article continues….
“Kylie first appeared with plump lips in 2014, meaning she was 16 years old when she got lip injections. Since then, her lips have changed beauty standards everywhere, leading to young girls taking the painful “Kylie Jenner Challenge” and using expensive lip plumpers to achieve the look. Tons of other female celebs have followed suit, and according to one plastic surgeon, “young girls in their early 20s and their late teens are getting lip fillers everywhere.” All because of one boy’s comments and how they fed into a star’s insecurities…”.
[The writer concludes as follows]
“Two quick takeaways: 1. Teach your children to face, and overcome their insecurities, not ignore them; and 2. Help them understand that “the tongue has the power to bring life or death”, and if they cannot control their tongue, they may not be able to control their future.”
I’d strongly advise every parent (grandparent) sign up to receive these insights at this link: https://axis.org/ct/  This is certainly not the culture you and I grew up with! God help us!
Sunday, we continued our series on Discipleship Essentials by talking about another essential belief: Sanctification! Christians weren’t meant to live lives of compromise and failure! God wants us to live victoriously above sin by cleansing us, filling us, and sanctifying us through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit! In Ephesians 5:1-20 Paul offers the standard, challenge, and solution to living a victorious Christian life. The standard is God Himself! In verses 1-2, we read:
“Be imitators of God, therefore as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:1-2).
Who are you imitating? As Christians, we are to model Christ who has taught us to love, yield, and sacrifice Himself to God. As Peter wrote, “We are to be holy as He is holy.” So, are you? Truth is, we face many challenges to living a holy life in a perverse and sinful culture when our sin nature is allowed to reign within. This bent to sin meets many opportunities! God help us!
And God does help us! How? In verse 18, we read: “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). You see, God has provided the answer to our internal bent on sinning: sanctification! When we finally imitate Jesus by yielding ourselves completely to God, He accepts our sacrifice (us) and in a moment often described as ‘Personal Pentecost” the Spirit cleanses our sinful nature, fills us with the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, and God sanctifies entirely! This allows us to live a life of holiness within the sinful culture! Will we continue to be tempted? Absolutely! But, with the sin nature destroyed and the Holy Spirit abiding and empowering, we can be holy as He is holy!
            Blessings! Pastor Dan

Northeast Community News – September 12, 2017

  Dear Friends and Family!
We had another wonderful day in the Lord, Sunday! In my humble opinion, any day we wake up, can go to God’s house and worship is a wonderful day! Sadly, we had many who could not be in God’s house this week! For some, a hospital visit was needed while others are recovering from surgery, overslept alarms, and some were just plain sick! In fact, as I write this to you on Monday morning I’m coughing, wheezing, and not feeling myself as I battle a chest cold! Yuck! But, God continues to be good and no doubt the sleep will do me good! Bless you for praying for all the sick ones! We serve a Great Physician who hears and answers prayer! Amen? Amen!
Sunday, we continued our series on Discipleship Essentials by talking about another essential belief: Adoption! In Romans 8:15-17 we read: “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “AbbaFather.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spiritthat we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:15-17).
There is so much here! First, it becomes clear that when we receive Christ in our hearts we not only received eternal life, we were adopted as God’s children. Second, as a son or daughter of God we can share intimacy. Third, we are no longer slaves, but heirs, co-heirs with Christ!
Some of us may wonder if we’re adoptable. We aren’t like the cute little kid at the orphanage who is sure to get adopted. Some of us are old, scared and bruised – beaten and disfigured. If you’re past is anything like mine, you’re sure nobody in their right mind would adopt you! But God’s love and grace is amazing! Yes, He wants to adopt you!
But His desire to adopt you isn’t out of pity; it’s out of His love! When you are adopted God doesn’t treat you like a stepchild or one He loves reluctantly; He treats you as a co-heir with Christ! Wow! As a co-heir with Christ He wants you to experience the same deep intimacy Jesus did! Further, He wants you to realize you’re no longer enslaved to past failures, bitterness over past wrongs, enslaved to sin or in fear of His wrath. He wants you to be free! Praise God!
But, whether you are adopted is up to you. God has been looking for a child just like you. Yes you! In fact, He has sent the adoption papers with the Holy Spirit to you, but needs to know if you’ll let Him adopt you? Will you let Him love you this morning? Will you say yes to Jesus? I pray that you said yes and continue to say yes!           Blessings! Pastor Dan
